From the very first days of class, student journalists learn basic rules that can guide them throughout their careers. The intricacies of AP style (and letting go of the Oxford comma.) Keeping paragraphs short and sentences tight. The invaluable inverted pyramid story structure. And, perhaps most importantly, the importance of writing without personal opinions and biases.
Journalists have a responsibility to inform the public. There are at least two sides to every story, and it’s irresponsible to only shine a light on one. Journalists must let go of their own opinions and trust the public to develop their own. Instead of telling readers what to think, responsible reporting should allow the truth to speak for itself.
