When Black Box Ice Cream opened their Smyrna storefront in August, they quickly became a local favorite. Already a Nashville food truck staple, customers know Black Box for their unusual flavors, vibrant colors, and free samples. When it comes to quirky varieties like Wasabi, sometimes even the most adventurous foodies like to try before they buy.

Black Box Ice Cream recently added some holiday flavors to the rotation. New customers and regulars alike stopped in for a taste on this dreary December day.

Shauna Reynolds: ON THIS DREARY DECEMBER AFTERNOON IN SMYRNA, TENNESSEE, THERE’S NO DENYING THAT THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL. BUT INSIDE THE BLACK BOX ICE CREAM SHOP,

(Bell chimes as door opens)

Shauna Reynolds: THE TREATS, AS ALWAYS, ARE SO DELIGHTFUL.

Alex Fisher: “So, everybody loves ice cream. And so, we have lots of options that you normally probably wouldn’t see at an ice cream shop that most people aren’t used to. We wanted to create something unique, but also something delicious.”

Shauna Reynolds: OWNERS ALEX FISHER AND HOLLY HALLMARK HAVE THEIR OWN MODERN CLASSICS ON THE MENU.

Alex Fisher: “Our most popular flavor is our ube. I get more compliments on that than anything else.”

Shauna Reynolds: ALEX IS ALSO SCOOPING UP FRESH SEASONAL DELIGHTS.

Alex Fisher: “This winter we’ve done our Gingerbread ice cream, which tastes like gingerbread cookies but is also gluten free. We do a Chocolate Orange based off of Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, the ones you get, and you smack, and they fall apart, and you eat the orange slices. And we also did a candy cane flavor that tastes like candy canes.

(Customers talk and laugh with Fisher)

Shauna Reynolds: AERIAL MOSLEY’S FAMILY IS HERE EVERY WEEK.

Aerial Mosley: (laughs) “Every Friday or Saturday. And then sometimes I come without telling my kids.” (more laughter)

Shauna Reynolds: THE MOSLEYS HAVE A MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK ICE CREAM IS ONLY A SUMMERTIME TREAT.

(car sounds)

Ariel Mosley: “No, eat ice cream every day, any day. Especially in this place.”

Shauna Reynolds: AT BLACK BOX ICE CREAM IN SMYRNA, TENNESSEE, FOR MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, THIS IS SHAUNA REYNOLDS.
